A residential solar array is designed to last roughly 25 to 30 years. Most asphalt shingle roofs in Alabama last about 20 to 30 years too, depending on the product and how well the roof was installed and ventilated. If your roof is already 12 or 15 years old when the panels go on, the math gets uncomfortable fast.
Here is the problem: when your roof eventually wears out, the panels have to come off before it can be replaced, then go back on afterward. That removal-and-reinstall step commonly runs a few thousand dollars on top of the roof itself. Nobody wants to pay to detach a solar system just to reroof underneath it a few years into ownership. That is why the honest first question is not "which panels?" but "how much life does my roof have left?"

That eliminates one of the most common sources of future leaks. Metal also lasts 40 to 50 years or more, so it will comfortably outlive the panels. If you are considering both a reroof and solar, a metal roof is worth a serious look.
Tile roofs are less common in Tuscaloosa, but they can accommodate solar with specialized mounts. The install is more labor-intensive and typically costs more.
